THE
FRESHER'S STUDENT GUIDE TO LIVERPOOL
Us
at Candy decided that all you new students out there might
appreciate a helping hand when you come to Liverpool.
It's a fine place - and despite what the mainstream media
insists on implying, it's one of the
safest
cities in the whole
of the UK, with crime of all types plummeting over recent
years.
Anyways, we've
put together a list of all the best websites that will help
you find your feet - music venues, pubs etc.
- good for info on bars & clubs
-
national gig guide - shows every gig, everywhere.
There's also loads of magazines which
have come out the last couple of years which will be invaluable
to you over the next three years - essential to planning
great nights out!
The Liverpool Echo is the region's daily newspaper; buy
IT on Fridays (it comes out at about 12.30pm in the city
centre - in newsagents & shops, and at newstands) and
you'll find the Live Guide section covering all that's happening
for the next week including interviews, competitions etc.
A bit mainstream, but handy all the same.
VENUES:
Here at Candy we're more concerned with music than anything
else, and the live scene in Liverpool - which is great and
still expanding.
Once you've been around for a couple of weeks, you'll no
doubt want to leave the comfort of University Campus and
the Academy
and venture out into Liverpool for your fix of live music.
A word of warning: don't get the Carling
Academy mixed up with the University of Liverpool's
Academy; it's a totally different venue, at the opposite
end of town and what's more you'll end up looking foolish
if you turn up brandishing the wrong ticket for the wrong
venue, indignantly demanding entry.
Two of the best known venues in Liverpool are The
Zanzibar Club, well known for the Bandwagon night,
and the Barfly,
part of the national chain. The world-famous
Cavern
Club, 'home of The Beatles' (even though the
original Cavern was knocked down to built a car park in
the 1980s; the rebuilt club is actually across the road
from the original site) plays host to loads of local &
touring bands plus the Mathew
Street Festival every August Bank Holiday.
For the very best in local & national punk music, you
can't do better than Heaven and Hell - a real gem with a
great scene going on. Foremerly the 24/7, this club has
really com eon in thelast 12 months. Our very own Pincushion
grace the stage regular, like.
For the rockers amongst you, try The
Krazy House- more a club than a venue of late
but they've been increasing the amount of live music of
late so keep your eyes open for anything interesting coming
up there.
Don't forget The Royal Court,
which has big name touring bands on - it's varied, though;
from dreary middle-of-the-road to irresistably hip.
Smaller venues, popular with students and locals alike (and
don't worry - the natives are friendly) include Hannah's
Bar.
HOW STUDENTS CAN GET FREE ENTRY TO GIGS AND CDs FOR NOTHING!!
Aha! Thought that would grab your attention.
But, it's not that hard (as the actress said to the bishop,
boom boom).
Throughout the UK, student media is short of people to write
for student magazines, and work for student radio stations.
All you have to do is get in touch with the following:
LIVERPOOL
STUDENT

It
looks great on your CV and radio in particular is a great
one for freebies; once you have your own show (and you know
you will) then all you have to do is register with PR agencies
who deal with student radio - we have a database of them;
email
for details. And don't
worry - this service is free!!!
And of course we're always on the look out for people to
be part of our Street Team, giving out flyers, stickers
etc. Membership to the Street Team ensures free entry to
gigs. Email Cath
for more info.
