THE FRESHER'S GUIDE TO MANCHESTER

A city known for its rich musical heritage in form of Oasis + The Smiths + The Buzzcocks + George Formby (well, he was popular), Manchester has a vibrant contemporary live scene, with bands both local and national, unknown and household names, playing every night. We hope our brief guide will help you settle into student life in Manchester and get the best out of what it can offer.

The local newspaper, which you can get from every newsagents in Manchester, everywhere, is the Manchester Evening News - . There's a morning edition of the paper as well – also called the Manchester Evening News. Curious.

MANCHESTER VENUES
MAnchester University has three gig venues within the Students Union on Oxford Street - The Academy is the largest, which puts on events by big names; acts this first semester include Bowling For Soup + Razorlight + Roni Size; there’s the Academy 2 (medium sized acts) and Hop & Grape/Academy 3 that has – yup, ya guessed it, smaller sized bands.
The Roadhouse is popular with students and locals, they rub along quite nicely, united in the pursuit of all things rock and indie.
Life Café
has unsigned band showcases from all over the north west – and beyond - and small-ish touring acts.

For the really big names (and be warned - ticket prices to match) then the MEN
(Manchester Evening News) Arena
is for you. You could also try Manchester Apollo for a range of stuff which covers both alternative music and that a little more middle-of-the-road.

HOW STUDENTS CAN GET FREE ENTRY TO GIGS AND CDs FOR NOTHING!!
An attention grabber to be sure!
Anyways, it's not that hard (as the actress said to the bishop, boom boom).
Throughout the UK, student media is short of people to write for student magazines, and work for student radio stations.
All you have to do is get in touch with the following:

It looks great on your CV and radio in particular is a great one for freebies; once you have your own show (and you know you will) then all you have to do is register with PR agencies who deal with student radio - we have a database of them; email for details. And don't worry, this service is free!!!

And of coursewe're always on the look out for
people to be part of our Street Team, giving out flyers, stickers etc. Membership to the
Street Team ensures free entry to gigs. Email for more info.
